Still on Oxygen
We have been home from the hospital since Thursday and I was really hopeful that we would be off of the oxygen by now, but we aren't. We went to the doctor's office to have her oxygen levels monitored on Friday, Sunday and again today in hopes that we would wean her off the oxygen. We are down from 1/2 liter to 1/8 of a liter, but at her appointment today her oxygen levels were still in the mid to low 90's when she was awake. The doctor was concerned about not knowing what her levels were at while sleeping, so they finally ordered an oximeter to monitor her oxygen levels at home. The oxygen company should be bringing it sometime today along with more oxygen tanks and we will take an oxygen reading every few hours day and night to see how she is doing. Then we will go back and see her doctor again on Friday. With all these doctors appointments, equipment and our long hospital stay I am very grateful to have insurance. Even though I am getting tired of paying our $20 copay every time I take her to the doctor, I am extremely grateful I don't have to pay the full charge for each short visit!!

We're home!
Yesterday was a fairly good day and they got Maya's oxygen down to 0.2 during the night. They also only deep suctioned her about 4 times in a 24 hour period and two of those times the nurses didn't hardly get anything and they said that the bulb suction was more effective.
My mom stayed the night with Maya and this morning when I got back to the hospital the nurse turned her oxygen down to 0.1. Well it wasn't long before her oxygen levels were dropping too low and they had to turn it back up to 0.2. The doctor came in and said that it was looking good for us to be able to go home soon, that was about 7 am. I was hopefully we would be out of there by noon. Well at about 10 am she ate and then went to sleep and while she was sleeping her oxygen levels were again dropping too low. Our nurse, the aide, and the doctor all came in at the same time to watch her and see if her levels would go up. Well they didn't go down and they had to put her oxygen up to 0.3. The doctor said he was just writting her discharge papers, but said we would have to wait until the afternoon and see how she does. She did fine on 0.3 and at about 2:30 pm the doctor came in and said we could go home! YEAH!! But we would have to go home with oxygen. I was completely fine with that, I just wanted to get home!
So after talking to the doctor, the discharge person, the respiratory therapist, and the nurse doing one last set of vitals, we finally got out of there at about 4:30 pm. We are now home with Maya on 0.5 liter of oxygen. We have a doctors appointment tomorrow and will probably have another one to follow up and check her oxygen levels at the beginning of next week. I hope to be off of the oxygen by the middle of next week!

Day 5
Tuesday was day five in the hospital and it was really pretty uneventful. We wish we were home, but we are still here. All her test results from the previous cultures came back negative. Her oxygen was turned down from 0.8 to 0.2, which is a good thing. They also spaced out her suctioning. She was suctioned a couple of times in the morning, but only bulb suctioned in the afternoon and through the night.
Today our goal is to get her off of oxygen, she had to be bumped up to 0.3 early this morning, but hopefully we can get off of it today so that we can go home tomorrow. She is definitely feeling much better. She has been smiling and playing much more than before. She is also eating great! We are tired and ready to go home, hopefully soon!

Hospital Day 4
Well, another day here in the hospital. The blood and urine tests they ran yesterday all are normal. They are doing both blood and urine cultures and the preliminary results for those are also normal, so that is a good sign. Maya had an ok night. She had a fever of 102 again last night at about 11 pm, after some tylenol it went down and she slept fairly well and was only suctioned twice during the night. This morning the doctor on from her pediatricians office came in and checked her out. He said she sounds better than yesterday, but still has some work to do. He said to plan on "days" still. When I asked him what he meant by days he said probably the end of the week, so my new goal is to be out of here by Friday. We can always hope for a miracle.
Ricky and I are both doing alright. We have been taking turns going home to sleep at night, the "bed" here is a pull out chair that is horribly uncomfortable and we are in a room with another baby, so there is always one of them awake and fussy or being suctioned. It is hard to get sleep, but amazingly it seems like I can usually get a few hours of sleep. Ricky went home last night. He just got back so I am going to feed Maya when she wakes up and then head home for a few hours to get some sleep. It is also hard because both Ricky and I feel like we are coming down with colds. We are downing airborne and trying to take care of ourselves, but it is tough when you are around these viruses all day. Hopefully we can hold off the sickness and stay healthy enough to take care of our baby! Other than that we are trying to keep ourselves entertained and sane. We have had family up at various times each day which is nice. Ricky is going to be working from here today and probably some each day this week, so I won't have to be here all day every day. I am really grateful that Maya didn't get sick a week earlier while Ricky was in the middle of Sundance. It is good to have him here!

Hospital Update Day 3
Well, we are still at the hospital. We had a crazy morning yesterday, her oxygen levels kept dropping and wouldn't go up. They kept uping her oxygen and suctioning her to keep her clear. She final stablized with her oxygen way up and being suctioned every hour. Poor girl. In the evening she was doing much better, they took her off her IV because she was eating good and doing much better.
Word is the she slept great last night, I also slept good. I was so exhausted and getting dizzy so I went home and litterally passed out in my bed for 7 hours. I didn't even hear my alarm go off. I was really hopeful that today she would continue to improve since she did so well last night.
I was wrong. This morning they suctioned her, gave her some abuterol and then suctioned her again. Her body went crazy after that. Her heart rate was through the roof, she was breathing extremely rapidly and her oxygen was not too low, but lower than they would have liked considering the amout they were giving her. Even after a while her heart and breathing were going wild. She ate really well but then she went limp and her heart and breathing would not slow down. The doctor came and looked at her and they decided to do some blood work because she also had a fever of 101.5 which is the highest it has been.
She has calmed down now and her heart and everything seems to be ok, they gave her some tylenol and took blood, so we are waiting on blood results and she is sleeping. I really feel for our poor little girl. She is so exhausted and working so hard to breathe. I will post what her blood results are once we hear and hopefully the rest of the day is uneventful!

Our latest adventure!
Well it is 11 pm and I am exhausted, but can't seem to get to sleep. It has been a rough day. Ricky doesn't like to say it was an adventure because he has bad luck with adventures, so maybe that is exactly what it is. So here's the scoop.
Maya had a rough night Thursday night, after her doctors appointment, shots and her congestion we didn't get much sleep. She had a fever ranging from 100 to 101 all night and her breathing was progressively getting worse. So at about 6:30 this morning when her temp was back to 101 I was debating calling the on call doctor at our pediatricians office or just waiting for them to open at 8 am. Ricky got up to take a shower just after 7 am and took her into the steamy bathroom. That seemed to help her a bit and she slept in her bouncy chair in the bathroom for about an hour. At about 8:30 am Ricky was getting ready to head off to work and Maya was breathing really hard and shallow, so I called the doctors and got an appointment for 9:50 am.
We took Ricky to work and rushed off to the doctors. We got back quick at the doctor and once she saw us in the hall way she knew why we were there. She said to me "I had a bad feeling about this one." Great I thought! They suctioned Maya's stuffy nose and monitored her oxygen levels. Her levels were dropping below the 88% level and she wasn't sounding any better after they suctioned her, so the doctor informs me that we need to go to Primary's. She then said that we had to transport her by ambulance because her oxygen levels were low. I thought that our insurance would not cover transport, so I was worried about the cost. I also had been watching her oxygen levels and knew that they weren't much lower than the levels at which the doctor had sent us home the day before. The ambulance was called while I was trying to get ahold of Ricky and my mom. I then asked if we had to go by ambulance. The doctor was back and forth when the paramedics arriaved and I still wanted to take Maya myself. Finally as the doctor was being wishy washy and people were trying to convince me I had to go by ambulance. I made the decision to take Maya in our car to Primary's. I grabbed her and stuck her in her car seat in only her diaper, covered her up and headed to the car. We made it to Primary's in less than 15 minutes and she was fine.
Once here we got put in an ER room and she got suctioned by nurses and listened to by doctors. They sent the mucus they suctioned from her nose for labs and it turns out she has RSV and that she would be staying here until she gets better. We sat in the ER for about 4 hours and then got moved up to a room on the 4th floor. Of all the babies in the Infant Medical Surgery Unit where we are, 42 have RSV and 2 are there for other reasons. How sad!
Well it is now 7 in the morning, we got a bit of sleep and Maya has slept a little too, especially once they suction her nose. She beathes so much better after that and can get a few hours of sleep. Last night she had a chest XRAY, there was some concern about her heart from what the doctors were hearing and also Pneumonia. The doc came in with the results of her xray at about 10:45 last night. Everything looks good, just typical signs of a viral infection, which RSV is.
So poor little Maya has oxygen in her nose, 3 chest monitors on her belly, a heart rate and oxygen level monitor on her left foot, and an iv in her right foot. It is a trick to handle a baby with all those wires. They have been suctioning her every few hours. She hates it, but breathes tons better after.
